BASKETBALL SUMMER CAMP IN NIGER BRINGS BACK HOPE TO WEST AFRICAN YOUTH
Hoops4Kids is back again in Niger for year 22. From July 9th - 13th, IOM (International Organization for Migration) supported a Hoops4Kids basketball summer camp in Niger’s capital, Niamey – its 22nd since 1997 – thanks to the support from the European Union, within the framework of the Migrant Resource and Response Mechanism.
This year, we had the participation of 40 kids boys and girls ages 16-19. During the 2019’s edition of Hoops4Kids in Niamey, each of the 40 participants enjoyed full board and lodging, as well as a full complement of basketball equipment and sport accessories. During the event, campers from different countries, ethnics and socio-economic classes had the opportunity to interact with one another. Campers learned the game of basketball through many concepts that help them in a 3v3 or 5v5 games. Campers also had the opportunity to listen to IOM representatives on the danger of traveling through the desert to reach Europe. This year, five migrants from IOM’s transit centre in Niamey also took part in the basketball summer camp.
